The Distance of the First Overtone RR Lyrae Variables in the MACHO LMC Database: A New Method to Correct for the Effects of Crowding

Previous studies have indicated that many of the RR Lyrae variables in the LMC have properties similar to the ones in the Galactic globular cluster M3. Assuming that the M3 RR Lyrae variables follow the same relationships among period, temperature, amplitude and Fourier phase parameter φ31 as their LMC counterparts, we have used the M3 φ31−log P relation to identify the M3-like unevolved first ...

The MACHO Project has catalogued ∼ 8000 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, ∼ 1800 in the Galactic bulge, and ∼ 50 in the Sgr dwarf galaxy. These variables are excellent distance indicators, and are used as tools to study the structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the bulge. The large datasets also probe uncommon pulsation modes. A number of double-mode RR Lyrae stars (RRd) are f...

The Macho Project Lmc Variable Star Inventory. Ix. Frequency Analysis of the First Overtone Rr Lyrae Stars and the Indication for Nonradial Pulsations

More than 1300 variables classified provisionally as first overtone RR Lyrae pulsators in the macho variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been subjected to standard frequency analysis. Based on the remnant power in the prewhitened spectra, we found 70% of the total population to be monoperiodic. The remaining 30% (411 stars) are classified as one of 9 types according t...

The distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud based on double-mode RR Lyrae stars

We use double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars from the macho variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to estimate its distance, by utilizing photometric data, linear pulsation and stellar atmosphere models. If we set EB−V = 0.11 and [M/H]= −1.5 for LMC, we get M − m = 18.52 mag, which is in agreement with the value obtained from Galactic cluster RRd stars. Although the formal statis...
